Start with the use of the area.

Explain what you want the area to do. Is it a path, an existing gravel area, or a smaller section of your property where you want material moved or spread? A photo and a simple description help connect the request to the result you expect.

Compton Land Services lists gravel spreading, dirt leveling, and dirt moving among its services. Each request still needs to be reviewed for site conditions, access, and scope.

Separate labor from material.

State whether material is already on the property. If it is not, ask who would choose, order, pay for, and arrange delivery of it. Do not assume that an estimate for spreading includes material supply or delivery.

Be clear about what needs to be moved and where it would go. Photos and approximate dimensions can help start the conversation; quantities and the final work plan should be confirmed before ordering anything.

Talk through access.

Describe where the work area sits in relation to the entrance and any proposed delivery location. Mention gates, tight turns, fences, soft ground, existing surfaces, and obstacles. Ask what access is needed for the proposed work.

Define the finish you expect.

Words like “level,” “smooth,” and “ready” can mean different things. Describe your intended use and ask what the estimate will deliver. Confirm whether any extra preparation, compaction, removal, or cleanup is included rather than assuming it is part of spreading material.

If the project involves drainage problems, structural needs, or requirements tied to another contractor’s work, bring those up at the start. Do not treat a general dirt work estimate as a promise to solve those separate issues.

Keep the first request simple.

  • The location and approximate work area.
  • What you want changed and why.
  • Photos of the area and entrance.
  • The material involved and whether it is already on site.
  • Your preferred timing and any related work being planned.

With those details, you can have a more useful conversation about whether the project is a fit and what the next step should be.
